The Big Lock 5 km from the village |
 |
Commissioned in 1964, the
Big Lock is named after
because it replaces 6 traditional locks on the Marne-Rhine canal.
The denivelé is 16m, it is 40m long and 6 meters wide.
This lock is unique in its design; it moves a steel gate of more than 22 tons equipped with an equivalent counterweight and requires almost 4000 m3 of water at each passage.
This is a little-known curiosity that should not be missed.
Not to be confused with the Arzwiller Inclined Plan which is also very impressive but of a totally different design.
