The Salt Departmental Museum is located in the Saulnois, within the Seille valley. The village of Marsal owes its name to its many salt springs that are the origin of a typical vegetation including the salicornia or "stone-pass". From the 13th century, Marsal was a truly fortified city that aroused the desires of the Dukes of Lorraine, the Bishops of Metz and the kings of France. Renovated by Vauban, the Porte de France now houses the Musée départemental du Sel.
